Alain Leroy (Maurice Ronet) is a man struggling with alcoholism, who leaves a rehabilitation clinic in Versailles after four months of treatment. He spends his first night away from the clinic with Lydia, a woman who claims he is cured, but he is still unsure about his future. As he navigates his relationships with old friends and acquaintances in Paris, Alain's mental state deteriorates, and he ultimately returns to the clinic, where he shoots himself in the heart after finishing a book.
