The Yearling

The story follows a boy named Jody, who adopts a trouble-making young deer. After discovering a bear has killed livestock, Jody and his father, Ezra "Penny" Baxter, set out to track the bear, accompanied by their dogs. Jody later adopts a fawn, which he names Flag, and the two become inseparable. However, as Flag grows, it becomes a nuisance, causing damage to the household and farm, leading to a confrontation between Jody and his father, ultimately resulting in the deer's death at the hands of Jody's mother, Ora.
