Marty Piletti (Ernest Borgnine), a good-natured but socially awkward Italian-American butcher living in The Bronx with his mother, is unmarried at 34 and faces constant pressure from family and friends to get married. After meeting Clara Snyder (Betsy Blair), a plain high school science teacher he connects with on the rooftop after a blind date abandonment, Marty promises to call her, but family and friends try to convince him not to. Despite his friends' objections, Marty realizes he's giving up a woman who makes him happy and decides to call Clara, leading to an unexpected romance that challenges his lonely bachelorhood.
