The film follows Lucy Dell (Shirley MacLaine), who disguises herself as a Japanese geisha in Tokyo to land the role of Cio-Cio-San in a production of Madame Butterfly. Her husband, Paul Robaix (Yves Montand), is initially unaware of her true identity, but eventually discovers her ruse and becomes jealous of his discovery.
