Stranded in a remote Iranian village, a journalist is approached by Zahra, a woman with a harrowing tale to tell about her niece, Soraya, and the bloody circumstances of Soraya's death by stoning, a slow and painful event that "had a carnival atmosphere led by village elders." As Soraya's story unfolds, she recounts how her husband, an abusive tyrant, used false rumors and manipulated the village authorities to condemn her to death after he became embittered when his wife began working for another man. The film is a powerful and haunting adaptation of the true story of Soraya Manutchehri, whose brutal murder in 1986 sparked outrage and drew attention to the harsh realities of life under Iran's repressive religious fundamentalism.
