In 19th century Wallachia, Romania, a policeman named Costandin is hired by a nobleman to track down a Gypsy slave who has run away from his estate after having an affair with his wife. The pursuit takes him on a journey through various communities and encounters with a feudal hierarchy steeped in tradition. Along the way, he faces shocking realities of the era, including public castration and the mistreatment of Sultana, the boyar's wife, who suffered at the hands of her husband.
