Broadway Melody of 1940

Broadway Melody of 1940 tells the story of Johnny Brett (Fred Astaire) and King Shaw (George Murphy), a struggling dance team that's given up on luck, while Clare Bennett (Eleanor Powell), a Broadway star, needs a new partner for her show. Owing to a case of mistaken identity, King is offered the chance to be Clare's dancing partner instead of Johnny, but Clare soon realizes that Johnny is the better dancer and falls in love with him after they share lunch together. When King pretends to be drunk on opening night to ensure Johnny gets the job, Johnny saves the show with a brilliant performance, leading to his becoming the permanent replacement.
