In 15th century Paris, Quasimodo, played by Anthony Hopkins, falls in love with Esmeralda, played by Lesley-Anne Down, a beautiful gypsy dancer who is also loved by Captain Phoebus, but ultimately becomes the target of Archdeacon Dom Claude Frollo's obsession. When Esmeralda is sentenced to death by hanging, Quasimodo rescues her and grants her Sanctuary in Notre Dame Cathedral. The two grow closer, but their love is complicated by Quasimodo's deformed appearance and Frollo's ruthless pursuit of Esmeralda, leading to a tragic confrontation that ultimately ends in Quasimodo's death.
