In 1900s Rome, Ciccio Pennisi, cousin of the late Nino Patroni's brother Er Più, calls his cousin Franco from faraway Cefalù to come help him with family matters. Franco, an awkward and weakling, pretends to be brave in front of the village and gains Silvana's love but angers Bartolo, a local strongman who wants to protect his sister Iris from his rival. Franco eventually becomes a true hero when he wears his cousin Nino's magic bowler hat, which gives him courage and strength, allowing him to defeat Bartolo in a duel and bring peace between the two villages.
