Blood Alley

Capt. Tom Wilder (John Wayne) is forced to transport nearly 200 villagers from Communist China to Hong Kong on a rickety paddle steamer after being "shanghaied" by local villagers who rescue him from prison. With the help of resourceful villagers and his own determination, Wilder must navigate treacherous waters, avoid detection by the Chinese Navy, and contend with internal conflicts within his crew. Along the way, he forms an unlikely bond with Cathy Grainger (Lauren Bacall), the daughter of a missionary doctor whose father was executed by the Red Chinese.
