On a summer day in the country, the three children of Hélène Berthier assemble to discuss what to do with their family's estate after her 75th birthday celebration. Juliette Binoche plays Adrienne, one of the siblings who wants to keep just a few mementos and convert the rest to cash, while Charles Berling portrays Frédéric, the eldest son who lives in Paris and hopes to retain the house and its contents as a family gathering place. The siblings disagree on how to proceed, with tax implications adding pressure to make decisions about their mother's beloved home, which becomes a focal point of their conflicting desires.
