A group of Australian SAS regiment soldiers are deployed to Vietnam in 1967/8, facing the harsh realities of war from numbing boredom and combat, to terrorizing mortar barrages and booby traps. As they navigate long patrols, ambushes, and the bureaucratic red tape of the conventional military hierarchy, their experiences forever change them but leave them glad to return home. The film avoids much of the political commentary on Australia's involvement in Vietnam, instead focusing on the soldiers' daily lives in camp, where humor, practical jokes, and copious beer fill the voids of fear and grief.
