In the aftermath of World War II, British Major Giles Burnside is tasked with sorting displaced civilians into either the Russian or American zones in occupied Austria. As he navigates the challenges of communication and bureaucracy, a charismatic interpreter named Janovic proves invaluable to his mission, but their uneasy truce is put to the test when Janovic's secret is revealed.
