In 1930s Manhattan's Upper East Side, promiscuous fashion model Gloria Wandrous (Elizabeth Taylor) falls in love with Weston Liggett (Laurence Harvey), the hard-drinking son of a working-class family who has married into wealth. After a whirlwind romance, their relationship is tested by Liggett's marriage to Emily (Dina Merrill) and his own troubled past. The film follows Gloria's transformation as she tries to reform her promiscuous ways and find true love with Weston.
