Keiko Mitani (Komaki Kurihara), a young journalist, interviews elderly woman Osaki Yamakawa (Kinuyo Tanaka) about her experiences as a sex slave in Borneo's Sandakan No. 8 brothel during World War II, where she was forced into prostitution after being sold by her poverty-stricken family at the age of 14.
