In 11th-century feudal Japan, an idealistic governor is banished and his family, including his wife and children Zushio and Anju, are torn apart by slave traders. Separated from their father, the young siblings find themselves sold into brutal servitude under the cruel bailiff Sansho, where they must confront the harsh realities of poverty and oppression. Despite the cruelty they face, the siblings cling to the teachings of their father, who urged them to be merciful to others, even in the face of overwhelming hardship. Ultimately, Zushiō finds a way to free his sister and bring an end to Sansho's tyranny, restoring compassion and humanity to those around him.
