Flight from Ashiya

Three US Air Force rescue pilots, TSgt Mike Takashima (Yul Brynner), Lt Col Glenn Stevenson (Richard Widmark), and 2nd Lt John Gregg (George Chakiris), embark on a mission to rescue Japanese civilians stranded in rough seas. As they head for their location, the film flashes back to chronicle the pasts of each pilot, revealing their personal struggles and motivations that shape their approach to the rescue. With Stevenson's prejudices against the Japanese threatening to undermine the mission, Takashima volunteers to parachute to the life rafts with rescue equipment, forcing his crewmates to confront their own fears and biases.
