Nightmares

A woman who leaves her house late at night to drive to the store while a killer is loose encounters some problems. In this segment of the anthology film "Nightmares," a highway patrolman is viciously stabbed by an unseen assailant during a routine traffic stop, though he survives and is taken to the hospital. The perpetrator is William Henry Glazier, a serial killer who escaped a mental institution and is currently terrorizing the Topanga area. Meanwhile, Lisa, a housewife and chain smoker, discovers that she is out of cigarettes and goes out to buy some more, despite her husband Phillip warning her not to. J.J. Cooney, an immensely talented video game player and hustler, becomes obsessed with beating The Bishop of Battle, a notoriously difficult video game where players fight off enemies and escape from a 3-D maze that features thirteen different levels. Despite his friend Zock Maxwell's skepticism about the thirteenth level being real, J.J. is determined to make it and spends hours repeatedly trying and failing to reach it. One night, J.J. sneaks into an arcade to attempt to finish the game, and he finally completes level 12, but the game's energy releases a wave of enemies that attack him. Catholic priest Father Frank MacLeod has lost his faith in God after witnessing the death of a young boy during a store robbery. He resigns from the rectory, intending to search for a new purpose in life, and encounters a mysterious black Chevrolet C-20 Fleetside with tinted windows on the road, which pursues him relentlessly. Housewife Claire Houston hears something scurrying in her attic on a stormy night, believes it's rats, and looks up an exterminator despite her husband Steven's hesitancy.
