In January 1943, the German army launched a great offensive against Yugoslav Partisans in Western Bosnia, fearing an Allied invasion of the Balkans. The only way out for Partisan forces and thousands of refugees was the bridge on the river Neretva. Against this backdrop of war, the film depicts the dynamics between German forces, Italian units, Chetniks, and Partisans, as they clash in a series of intense battles.
