In 19th century England, a renowned brain surgeon rescues a former student from being hanged on a false conviction for murder and subjects him to a sinister experiment at an ancient, repurposed abbey. There, he uses a mysterious animation-suspending drug called "black sleep" to map the functions of the human brain, forcing his pupil into assisting him in operating on living subjects. However, as the student discovers that most of these subjects have survived but are being kept in a dungeon-like cellar, they must confront the true horrors of their captor's twisted research.
