Anatoliy Kuznetsov stars as Fyodor Ivanovich Sukhov, a Red Army soldier returning home to his wife, as he finds himself entangled in a desert fight between a Red Army cavalry unit and Basmachi guerrillas. Sukhov teams up with Sayid (Spartak Mishulin), a skilled but taciturn man, to protect the harem of the Basmachi leader Abdullah. As Sukhov tries to help the harem women "modernize" and leave their past, he must confront Abdullah and his gang, with the help of a former Tsar's customs official, Pavel Vereschagin (Pavel Luspekayev), who joins Sukhov's side in the battle.
