Susan Hayward stars as Lillian Roth, a Broadway and Hollywood star who rebels against her domineering mother's pressure after her childhood sweetheart David Tredman dies. After a series of unhappy marriages to aviator Wallie and fellow alcoholic Tony Bardeman, Lillian struggles with alcoholism and eventually finds solace in an Alcoholics Anonymous shelter, where she meets sponsor Burt McGuire.
