In the tumultuous years leading up to the American Civil War, a railroad's western expansion becomes a flashpoint for rebellion and sabotage. Captain John Nelson, incognito Army Corps of Engineers officer, must outmaneuver Southern sympathizers, led by William Quantrill, while navigating a complicated romance with the foreman's daughter Barbara, all against the backdrop of a nation teetering on the brink of war. As the railroad pushes westward, violence escalates and Nelson finds himself at the forefront of a battle to complete the transcontinental line.
