Barton MacLane was an American actor and playwright born on Christmas Day, 1902, in Columbia, South Carolina. He excelled at sports in high school before attending Wesleyan University, where he graduated and began his acting career with roles in The Quarterback (1926) and other early films and stage productions. He later became a staple of film noir and westerns as the tough but often hapless hero type, starring alongside notable actors like Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt.
