Jim Slater (Richard Widmark) is searching for the truth about his father's death during the Apache ambush at Gila Valley in southern Arizona. He meets Karyl Orton (Donna Reed), a woman whose husband was also killed by Apaches, and together they uncover a web of deceit and betrayal involving Jim's own father, William Slater (John McIntire), who supposedly stole gold from his fellow survivors before disappearing with the loot. Renewed Apache hostilities and an impending range war complicate their quest for answers, as they are pursued by various individuals seeking revenge or trying to exploit the situation for their own gain.
