In 18th dynasty Egypt, Sinuhe, played by Edmund Purdom, grows up as a poor orphan adopted by a physician and his wife, learning medicinal craft and trepanation. He becomes a brilliant physician to the service of Pharaoh Akhnaton, who is drawn into court intrigues, learns the answers to life's questions, and falls obsessively in love with a Babylonian courtesan named Nefer, played by Jean Simmons. Sinuhe faces personal triumphs and tragedies against the turbulent events of the 18th dynasty, including being condemned to death for his desertion of the court, losing his parents, and ultimately killing Pharaoh Akhnaton at the behest of Princess Merit, played by Gene Tierney.
