In 19th-century Paris, courtesan Marguerite Gautier (Greta Scacchi) falls deeply in love with middle-class man Armand Duval (Colin Firth). When Armand's father asks her to leave him, she acquiesces and they part ways. Years later, when poverty and illness overwhelm Marguerite, Armand returns to Paris and discovers she is dying, rekindling their lost love before passing away. Decades later, an old Armand (Colin Firth) pays his respects at Marguerite's grave.
