Michel Gerfaut (Alain Delon), a charming professional card player, helps a car accident victim, unaware that the victim is actually a high-ranking official being targeted by assassins. After the victim's death, Gerfaut becomes the target of two hitmen, who mistakenly believe he is a mercenary, and is soon surrounded by a series of deadly attempts. Following a series of clues, Gerfaut tracks down the conspirators, but his girlfriend Béa (Dalila Di Lazzaro) is also targeted in a final, fatal ambush.
