In 1850 San Francisco, Russian Countess Marina Selanova flees an arranged marriage to Prince Semyon and boards a ship bound for Sitka, where her uncle can protect her. Her rival, Captain Jonathan Clark, refuses to negotiate with her, but she eventually wins him over by pretending to be a noblewoman at one of his parties. The two fall in love and get married, but Prince Semyon kidnaps Marina, forcing her to marry him in Sitka. Jonathan rescues her, and the two sail away together.
