Charles Laughton stars as Charles Staggers, a London street performer who protects Vivien Leigh's character Liberty ("Libby"), a talented pickpocket and dancer, when she steals from songwriter Harley Prentiss (Rex Harrison). Libby's dancing leads her to meet Harley, and she launches a stage career, while Charles is seemingly spurned by the waif he has helped.
