Duke Fergus (John Wayne) falls for Ann 'Flaxen' Tarry in 1900s San Francisco, but loses money to crooked gambler Boss Tito Morell and returns home before making a fortune. With Flaxen as his entertainer, he opens a new gambling establishment, only to see it destroyed by the 1906 earthquake. After helping Flaxen recover, both Fergus and Morell run for mayor, with Fergus ultimately winning and marrying Flaxen in Montana.
