Fred Astaire as Guy Holden travels from Paris to London on a cross-channel packet boat where he meets Ginger Rogers' character Mimi Glossop and accidentally tears her dress. He lends her his overcoat, leading her to mistakenly believe he's the co-respondent hired by her lawyer. In reality, Mimi is seeking a divorce from her geologist husband Cyril Glossop, accompanied by her domineering aunt Hortense and bumbling lawyer Egbert Fitzgerald. The unlikely pair eventually falls under a spell while dancing together, performing an elaborate 16-minute dance sequence titled "The Continental".
