A married woman, Charlotte "Lotte" Hoffmeister (Rebecca Hall), falls in love with her husband's teacher, Friedrich Zeitz (Richard Madden). Separated by World War I, they pledge their devotion to one another through secret letters, but the war and a military blockade prevent Friedrich from returning to Germany. Eventually, Friedrich returns home, and after a tense reunion, they reunite and promise to never leave each other again.
