Three figures - Death (Conrad Veidt), the Devil (Reinhold Schünzel), and a ghostly Harlot (Anita Berber) who plays various roles throughout - gather at midnight in an antiquarian bookshop to read five macabre stories from books, each segment based on works by Anselm Heine, Robert Liebmann, Edgar Allan Poe, and Robert Louis Stevenson.
