Joseph Tomelty was an Irish actor, playwright, and theatre manager born in Portaferry in 1911. He co-founded the Group Theatre in Belfast in 1940 and served as its general manager until 1951. Tomelty's stage works were influenced by music, with several titles named after songs, including "The Singing Bird" (1948). His family legacy continued through his daughters, Frances and Roma, both actresses.
