He transitioned from a lawyer to acting after being encouraged by Joseph Jefferson, and appeared in over 140 films between 1924 and 1948, often portraying authority figures such as doctors, officials, and lawyers. Notable roles include his stern yet loving father in Skippy (1931) and its sequel Sooky, as well as a flamboyant lawyer in Remember the Night (1940).
