Ian McDiarmid is a Scottish actor and director born on August 11, 1944. He began his stage career at five, attending the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1974 and earning an Olivier Award for Best Actor for Insignificance in 1982. McDiarmid gained prominence as Emperor Palpatine in the Star Wars franchise starting from Return of the Jedi in 1983, and also received a Tony Award for Faith Healer in 2006.
