Thomas Alan Waits, born December 7, 1949, is an American musician, composer, songwriter and actor known for his deep, gravelly voice and lyrics that often focus on society's underbelly. Inspired by Bob Dylan and the Beat Generation, he began singing in the San Diego folk scene as a young boy before moving to Los Angeles and signing with Asylum Records. His music has since reflected diverse genres, earning him critical recognition and cult following.
