He emigrated to the United States with his family in 1929 and later served in the Army during World War II before pursuing a career in acting, joining the Actor's Studio in 1947. Known for roles like Rebbe Mendel in Yentl (1983) and Papa Mousekewitz in An American Tail, Persoff appeared in over 200 television series, films, and theatre productions throughout his 55-year career.
