In 1635, Hanshiro Tsugumo requests permission to perform seppuku in the courtyard of Lord Ii's castle. He shares the tale of Squire Motome Chijiiwa, a samurai from the same clan who was forced to perform seppuku by his cruel second, Hikokurō Omodaka. Hanshiro Tsugumo sets out to avenge his son-in-law's death, challenging the retainers who participated in Motome's execution to a duel, and ultimately kills them by shaving their topknots, a dishonor reserved for cowards.
