Two women, one waiting for her son and the other for her husband, survive in a reed-filled swamp by killing and robbing samurai who stray into their home. After learning that her son has died in battle, the older woman tries to scare her daughter-in-law away from a returned friend, Hachi, who has been at war and is now showing interest in her. The older woman's attempts to sabotage their relationship escalate into a desperate game of cat and mouse, with the women using a mysterious mask to terrorize each other and ultimately lead to a shocking climax.
