Seppuku

Down-on-his-luck veteran Tsugumo Hanshirō, played by Tatsuya Nakadai, arrives at the estate of the Iyi clan and requests to commit seppuku within the courtyard, hoping to find a worthy second to deliver the coup de grâce. Senior counselor Saitō Kageyu, played by Akira Ishihama, questions Hanshirō's resolve and integrity, suspecting he seeks charity rather than an honorable end. As Hanshirō recounts his life story, he reveals a complex web of events that led him to seek death, including his role in his clan's abolition, the loss of his family, and the tragic deaths of his friends and loved ones. With a fierce battle ensuing, Hanshirō kills several samurai and smashes into pieces the symbol of the House of Iyi's glorious history, ultimately committing seppuku as he is shot by three matchlock guns.
