Veronika and Boris, played by Tatiana Samoylova and Aleksey Batalov, come together in Moscow on the eve of World War II. As the Germans invade, Veronika waits patiently for Boris, who is drafted into the army, while she is forced to marry Boris's cousin Mark, who is later revealed to be unfaithful. Meanwhile, Boris faces the harsh realities of war, including injuries and the loss of friends. The film follows their tragic love story, set against the backdrop of one of the most tumultuous periods in Soviet history, as Veronika waits for Boris's return and tries to rebuild her life amidst the devastation.
