The Fugitive

In a Latin American state where the Catholic Church has been outlawed, a nameless fugitive priest evades capture by an anti-clerical police lieutenant. The devout local peasantry hides him from military forces, revealing he is the last remaining cleric in the country after his fellow clergy were executed or exiled. As the priest flees, he inspires loyalty and protection in an indigenous outcast who begs him to baptize her illegitimate infant. Ultimately, the priest's attempt at forgiveness for a traitor's betrayal sparks public outcry and a crisis of conscience among the authorities.
