The Ballad of Narayama

In rural Japan, a traditional practice known as ubasute is carried out when elderly individuals reach 70 years old. Orin (Kinuyo Tanaka), a vibrant 69-year-old grandmother, struggles to prepare her family for this ritual, where she will be carried to the top of a nearby mountain to die in solitude. Tatsuhei (Teiji Takahashi) and Tamayan (Yūko Mochizuki) are among those who must face their family's aging patriarch, as social convention dictates that elders who reach 70 years old should be given this opportunity to pass on. The film explores the complexities of family relationships and the dying traditions that shape these communities.
