The Beloved Rogue

John Barrymore stars as François Villon, a poet and patriot who becomes "King of the Fools" after offending King Louis XI (Conrad Veidt). François is banished from Paris but uses his popularity to send food to the poor via catapulting it into town from the city walls. He ends up in the room of Charlotte de Vauxcelles (Marceline Day) and outwits her betrothed, Count Thibault d'Aussigny. François is eventually tortured and then freed by beggars and thieves before marrying Charlotte to escape his fate.
