In early 20th century Czechoslovakia, a gravely ill chemist named Prokop (Karel Höger) recalls his discovery of a powerful explosive called krakatit. As he recovers in a hospital with doctors and nurses, Prokop experiences delirium and remembers inventing the explosive. He is approached by a veiled woman who asks him to deliver a letter to his friend Jiří Tomeš. Prokop's memories resurface as he learns about krakatit being promoted by Carson, a representative from Balttin Works, which offers him employment to work on their research. Prokop declines but is brought to the Balttin palace, where he begins a romance with Princess Wilhelmina Hagen and becomes entangled in a plot to use krakatit for destructive purposes. As tensions rise, Prokop confronts Carson and ultimately decides to sabotage the operation, setting off a chain of events that leads to widespread destruction.
