Gale Sondergaard was a pioneering American actress whose career spanned from theatre to films in the late 1930s and early 1940s. She won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her film debut in Anthony Adverse (1936) and received a second nomination for Anna and the King of Siam (1946). Her life was marked by personal tragedy, including her husband Herbert Biberman's persecution as one of the Hollywood Ten, which led to her own career's demise.
