James Gilmore Backus, born February 25, 1913, was a renowned American actor known for his iconic roles in Gilligan's Island and Rebel Without a Cause, as well as the voice of Mr. Magoo. He also starred in I Married Joan and The Jim Backus Show, a one-season series. A skilled golfer, Backus made the 36-hole cut at the 1964 Bing Crosby Pro-Am tournament, earning his place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960.
