In a Tokyo suburban neighborhood, schoolboy Minoru Hayashi and his little brother Isamu lead a mischievous life, demonstrating their ability to fart at will. Their tantrum over not receiving a new TV set leads to a silence that causes a stir in the neighborhood, with the women speculating about the family's finances and reputation. As the silence escalates, Minoru and Isamu's English tutor becomes involved in their search, and their aunt shows signs of mutual attraction with him. Ultimately, the family's patience is tested as the neighbors try to get the boys to break their silence, leading to a joyful resolution when the parents finally give in and buy the boys a TV set.
